Chuck Foreman – Teaching Pastor

John chapter 6 is an incredible study in human fickleness and also in the relationship Jesus of Nazareth calls us into with himself. Interestingly, when he had the crowds in the palm of his hand, when he could easily have been made their king, he instead refused to give them what they wanted or to tell them what they wanted to hear. He risked his relationship with his public audience in order to tell them the truth. His teaching and the ask he was making of them was just too hard for them to hear. And so they bailed on him. You can just picture the next scene, when he turned to the Twelve and asked, “What about you guys? You don’t want to leave too do you?” And Peter speaks up, as if articulating the consensus of the group, and says, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”

When you think about it, Peter was right. Who else out there is really worth following besides Jesus? Who else has words of life like him? Who else could teach us how to live and love like he did? And if you believe the meaning of the story, who else was willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for humankind? I don’t know about you, but I’m lining up with Peter. There’s no one out there who’s got what Jesus has. I’m following him. May I do a better job than I have. May others come along. We follow better together—as long as we keep our eyes on him.
