Financial guru Dave Ramsey says there are only three things you can do with money: spend it, save it, or give it. Most people who have financial struggles, worry, stress and anxiety most often have a problem with the first of those – how they spend their money. And, they don’t do enough of the second and third items, saving and giving.

Unfortunately, most Americans, Christians included, are very poor money managers. They don’t have a plan of how to spend their money and they don’t know where they’re spending their money, and they live paycheck to paycheck as a result. 

The first step to financial freedom is having a different attitude. You need to acknowledge the sovereignty and authority of God in your finances. However, this is usually the area of our life in which we don’t include God. We think we earned the money, we made the business, we brought home the bacon – so we should be the ones determining what we do with the money! This is in direct opposition to what Scripture teaches, though. We need to have the attitude that David had in 1 Chronicles 29:10-14. “David blessed the Lord before all the assembly; and David said: “Blessed are You, Lord God of Israel, our Father, forever and ever. Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power and the glory, the victory and the majesty; for all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours; Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, And You are exalted as head over all. Both riches and honor come from You, and You reign over all. In Your hand is power and might; in Your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. Now therefore, our God, We thank You and praise Your glorious name. But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly as this? For all things come from You, and of Your own we have given You.”

Again, the first step to financial freedom is having the attitude of acknowledging the sovereignty and authority of God in your finances. It’s all His! He is the One who determines how much money you have; He has the power to shut off your source of income without notice, and giving to Him is the only way out of your financial problems.
