Message Monday 2/5/18 – Jesus Follower: Oaths

Edwin Sicairos – Student Pastor

This “Oaths” teaching by Jesus on the sermon on the mount points out the sin in men, exposes the sin of this world and teaches us how holy God is. Trying to be reverent towards God, a person of integrity and avoid manipulation is impossible to do on our own. These things that Jesus is calling out on us are not to be dealt with and accomplished in our sinful nature. We are conceived into sin, all of us. Romans 3:10 makes it clear that no one is good or righteous, none seek God or understand. We have all turned aside and become completely worthless. No matter how hard we can try to follow Jesus’s example of true Christian living, we will never be able to on our own. By nature, we are sinful and therefore apart from Christ all we can do is please our sinful flesh. We are dead in our sin (Ephesians 2:1). We need to be made alive by the spirit of God that only he can give as he pleases (Ezekiel 36:26). “So, God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, that we may become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Cor 5:21). Those who are in Christ have the spirit of God who is the spirit of all truth living in them. It is through this spirit living in us that we can rightly and truly do these things that Jesus calls out on us. Our sinful nature can only please the flesh while those who are in Christ please God.
