We are in danger of not seeing the truth and missing opportunities to grow if we think we already know it all and are above approach and beyond correction.
If we think we already know it all and are above and beyond correction, or even challenge, we will also become extremely critical and condemning of others who do not do it our way, see it our way and keep all the rules we think they should keep.
Jesus’ continual challenge was convincing his own people that God had a different agenda than theirs. They were missing-did not know-their own God because of their narrow-mindedness. Jesus’ analogy in the Parable of the Wineskins is that we are the wineskins. We cannot contain the “new wine” of his teaching in old wineskins.
The problem is never with the wine; it’s always with the wineskins. We are the wineskins, either old or new.
BIG Idea: The teachings of Jesus are like New Wine which can only be contained in New Wineskins. We must become New and be willing to set aside our old ways in order to receive and live out the New Way of Jesus.
