If, as it says in Revelation 21-22 and I Thessalonians 4:13-18, heaven and its occupants comes to earth with Jesus at his return to set up his Kingdom here—if the dwelling of God will be here with men and he will live with us and be our God and we will be his people—if he actually does wipe away every tear and there is no more death or mourning or crying or pain—if the old order of things passes away and everything is made new—if even creation is restored and the curse of decay and natural disasters brought by sin (The Fall) is removed—if our world isn’t just going to come to an end, but rather be “liberated from its bondage to decay” (Romans 8:18-23)… (more…)

What would you do if a local authority operating under the edict of the central government of your nation ordered you to recant your testimony about the resurrection of Jesus and renounce your faith in him, on pain of torture and death?  What would you do? I mean, really, what would you do?  Would you have the faith and the courage to look them in the eye and say, “Go ahead, do your worst, but I will never renounce my Jesus!” ?  That’s what Antipas, the first Christian martyr in Asia Minor, near the end of the first century, actually did.   (more…)

Have you ever talked to a close friend about your personal struggles or challenges just because you felt you needed someone to know?  And your friend simply knowing didn’t change your circumstance at all, but you felt better just knowing that they knew?  That’s the sense we get from this section of the Book of Revelation 5-11, A Glimpse of Victory.  Jesus lets the Christians at the end of the 1st century who were suffering under Rome know that, not only does he know what they are enduring, he knows how it will turn out—in Victory. Revelation is a difficult piece of literature to understand, at first glance. But when we pay attention to the historical circumstance of those who received John’s Apocalypse and learn about the nature of apocalyptic literature, which we also find elsewhere in the Bible, it begins to come together for us. That’s our quest in this series.
